Pancreatic Cancer causes 5% of deaths from cancer but only receives 1% of cancer research funding (NCRI Strategic Analysis 2002). This needs to increase to ensure better outcomes for patients.

Dudley Trail Walk (6 miles), 3rd May 2009
For the 3rd year running the Bytheway family did the Dudley Trail walk.Andrew Bytheway said "25 family members took part in the trail this year. The weather was very kind to us and the walk went very well. We looked very impressive as a group, all of us dressed in the t-shirts, as we walked around the local canal paths and nature reserves. We had enquiries about the charity along the way and also when we were all sitting in the pub after the walk - just the effect we were aiming for."

Reading Half Marathon 2009 - Sunday 29th March 2009
Pancreatic Cancer UK was again one of the Official supported Charities in 2009. This is a major half marathon event with 12,000 runners starting and finishing in the Madejski Stadium - home of premiership Reading Royals and London Irish. Jurassic Coastal Challenge 2009 - 27th-29th March 2009
Nigel Smith ran an amazing 3 marathons in 3 days along the Dorset coast to raise over £4500 for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of his friend Ray Sturgess who sadly died from pancreatic cancer in 2008 at age 43. For more information see Nigel's report on the race.
On Air on the Buses 2009 - 2nd-21st March 2009
After pensioner Kate Hardcastle lost her mother and her brother to pancreatic cancer she was determined to raise awareness of the disease and funds for research. She decided to use her pensioner's free bus pass to travel round England by bus visiting 37 BBC local radio stations and where possible getting on air to talk about her experiences. Various people have undertaken skydive's for PCUK. Paul Hammond who raised over £2000 , Rebekah Rawding who raised over £1000 , Emma Wilson, Andrew Kent whose wife has pancreatic cancer, his daughter Lesley Kent and a friend Alex Riddell all did tandem jumps and Will Duckworth did a freefall.

We had 11 runners including Pauline Kelly who ran in memory of her husband, Brian, who died from Pancreatic Cancer at the age of 57. She ran with her daughter Susan, training partner Astrid and Susan's friend Sian. They were joined by Robert Horsfall, Helen Cameron, Sue and Andy Williams, Meg Duncan, pancreatic cancer survivor Trace Allen and his wife Joy. Joy finished 3rd in the V60 class.

Bike to the Future 2008 - Ride around the World May-September 2008
In 2004 Les Niewiara organised a fundraising bike-ride from Bolton to Hammersmith Hospital and raised £16,700 for Pancreatic Cancer UK to celebrate the first anniversary of his Whipple's surgery. Les Niewiara had survived two bouts of Pancreatic Cancer as he had to have chemo-radiotherapy in 2007. From 24th July to 7th August 2008 he planned to cycle 1542km from Hammersmith, London to Krakow, Poland to raise awareness and funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK and wanted many others around the UK and the world to join him by either joining part of his trip or organizing or taking part in their own cycling events so that the combined distance reaches 40,000km - ie the distance round the world. Les was taken ill again the week of the start of the ride but he still managed to join the team in Hanover and cycle with them to Krakow.
He inspired many others to organise cycling fundraising events. Medwen Roberts cycled 275 miles from Holyhead to Chepstow on 5th to 12th June. Steve Hastings and 9 friends took part in the Marin Rough Ride event on Sunday 8th June 2008 http://www.justgiving.com/stevehastings. Staff from the Welsh Assembly organised a sponsored cycle ride on Sunday 22nd June as part of National Bike Week 2008 to commemorate the loss of a former colleague Peter Rossiter who sadly passed away November 2007.
The ride covered 50 miles, starting at the Brecon Theatre, South Wales and followed the `Taff Trail` cycle trail from Brecon mountains to the centre of Cardiff. There were a total of 11 riders that successfully cycled the 52 miles from Brecon to Cardiff. Gary Brown cycled 100km from Manchester to Blackpool on 13th July, Kirsti Wright cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats starting 2nd-16th August with her friend Donna. Charles, Sophie, Caroline and Charles-J Pridgeon cycled over 700km from Berlin to Copenhagen In August 22-31.
Richard Burch also cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats starting 7th September with friends from his cycling club. His wife has had surgery for neuroendocrine cancer. You can see photos of the ride and read more about the event on our web-page

their Justgiving page. Race HQ reported that Simon retired after 60 miles at 9.50pm on Saturday. He's OK, but his legs have decided they'd had enough. Charles managed to complete an amazing 100miles before checkpoint time limit forced him to pullout on Sunday. Still seems an uncomprehensible distance to us.

Patient John Fisher, a drummer, had chemotherapy for advanced cancer last year and his friends and fellow musicians ran the British 10K for Pancreatic Cancer UK. This year he is keen for his family to support the charity. His sister Gill Brundle ran the Three Forts Marathon wearing red devil horns and said her PCUK T-shirt got lots of attention including from the Mayoress of Worthing who presented the medals. Andrew Bytheway reports that "Just to let you know that the walk went OK despite the rain! 24 of us took part in total. When the rain did stop (ocasionally) we looked impressive as a group in the t-shirts. We even had a few enquiries about the charity etc when we were all sitting in the pub after the walk - just the effect we wanted. The t-shirts are still being put to good use - 6 are now worn every Monday as it is now the new team colours for my nephews six a side football team who hold matches at the local leisure centre, and more are worn by other family members during their weekly darts competitions in the local pubs and clubs - so we are "spreading the word" as much as we can. Stuart Baker lost his Grandmother in March last year, to Pancreatic Cancer, and subsequently decided not to cut his hair until he was 16. On his 16th birthday, on May the 1st this year, he had the majority of his hair shaved off at his school and raised money in the process by charging entry to people to come and watch.

Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race, Easter 2008
Sarah Tessler, the granddaughter of the late Sylvia Stewart, raised funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK through competing in the gruelling Devizes to Westminster 125mile canoe race over Easter. That was a fantastic effort in such extremely cold weather.

Barney Run, Barnard Castle School, County Durham, 15th February 2008
Each year Barnard Castle School has a sponsored run. This year they decided to support Pancreatic Cancer UK, having recently lost their friend, colleague and teacher Tony Parkinson to the disease. The sponsored runs take place in early Februrary, during Games sessions throughout the week. Pupils are given a medal for taking part and asked to raise sponsorship. Ex pupils of the school, in County Durham, ran the four-mile Barnard Run to raise money for research into pancreatic cancer, the disease which claimed the life of maths teacher Tony Parkinson at 44 in 2006. The Old Barnardians joined more than 200 current students in the race which has been staged every year since 1885 and is the oldest competition in the school's history. Trophies were presented by Great Britain triathlon athlete and Pancreatic Cancer UK representative Dr Trace Allen, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2004.

Celebration Evening, Ealing, 10th November 2007
The event was held at the Perivale Residents Association Club House at Ealing Central Sports Ground, Perivale in celebration of the life of Roger Price. This is where Roger played football for Ealing Association and a fitting place in consideration of all the great times Roger experienced with the club. The evening had a disco, buffet and raffle with also hopefully an auction. It was organised by one of Roger's friends Charles Brooks and was a thank you to all who had helped raise over £10000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK in January and another significant sum for Leukaemia Care and research. All money raised from this evening will be split between Pancreatic Cancer UK (75%) and Leukaemia Research (25%) and they raised a further £1000 for PCUK.
Scotland to Coventry Cycle Ride September 2007
Three members of the Fleet Air Arm Ex Field Gun Crew Association cycled from Scotland to Coventry as a tribute to Paul Dunn who sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer earlier in the year. They divided the money raised between three causes including £1700 for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Charity Motor Bike Ride, Southampton, 25th August 2007
There was a charity bike ride to The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean, also known as ‘The Pub with No Name’, on 25th August 2007, meeting at Southampton & District Motorcycle Club car park, Woodside Road, Eastleigh, at 10am for a 10.30 set off time, and also picking up riders at Wickham Square on the way. The ride was in memory of popular SDMCC club member and well-known local photographer Ray Humphrey, who lost his battle against pancreatic cancer last October. The event was held to raise awareness of the disease and money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK. The ride passed through some beautiful Hampshire locations, arriving at the pub at around mid-day. Sandra Torrens is arranging a number of events in Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Her husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April. On August 7th there was a sponsored toddle around the park in Garrison. This started at the Bilberry Restaurant, children completed a lap around the park and returned to the Bilberry. Afterwards they hosted a coffee morning with refreshments and cakes.

Bugsy Malone, The Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth
The Upper 6th business studies students at The Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth raised £250 for Pancreatic Cancer UK by managing the finances of the school musical "Bugsy Malone". They formed their own sole trader company called "The SpeakEasy Syndicate" and PCUK was chosen as their nominated charity by one of the students whose father sadly died during the project.

Rebecca Cheriyan produced a charity performance in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK. A talented team of 14 students were brought together to perform hits from well known Broadway and West-End shows such as Chicago, Grease and Phantom Of The Opera. The show took place on Saturday 30th June at the Brae Hall at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm). Refreshments were available at the bar and there were leaflets on pancreatic cancer to raise awareness of the cause for their performance. Together with the Splinters Youth Theatre Production they have raised over £6000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK including matched giving from BP.report from school web-site

The Friendly Auctioneers Golfing Society chose Pancreatic Cancer UK to benefit from its annual charity golf tournament. £13,500 was raised by an auction following the tournament.

Charity Youth Theatre Production, Brae, Shetland, Sunday 22nd April 2007
SPLINTERS held its annual charity fundraiser in Brae Public Hall on Sunday, 22nd April and this year selected Pancreatic Cancer UK as its charity to contribute to fundraising for the charity by 16 year old Rebecca Cheryan who recently lost her Aunt to pancreatic cancer.The award winning Shetland performance of the Juniors production Woods of No Return and the double award winning Shetland/Aberdeen performance by the Youth of Jolly Good Fun were being performed. This involved 43 children age 6-17 years from the north end of Shetland. Parents also contributed 43 raffle prizes and a fantastic collection of home baking to boost the proceeds. Di Newbold who runs the theatre group lost her mother to pancreatic cancer 14 years ago and so was keen to support Rebecca's fundraising. Rebecca, who has a fantastic singing voice is also organising a musical event at the end of June to raise more funds. All the performers will be in the 12-18 age group.
London Marathon, Sunday 22nd April 2007
Simon Bishop ran in memory of his mother-in-law. Simon completed the marathon in 4 hours 22min and 52sec. Nottingham pancreatic surgeon Ian Beckingham is running in memory of one of his patients, local GP Jim McCracken, and all the other patients they have looked after at the QMC and is aiming for sub-3hours. That was the intensive training and Ian is starting to taper down now for last 3 weeks.
Ian says that "Jess gets very upset if I go out in running kit without her. Which one looks more tired here! Shame she can't run the marathon with me on the day.". Photo on right shows the result of heavy training in 29miles of mud at the Belvoir Challenge in February. Unfortunately Ian Beckingham has injured his back and has had to withdraw from this year's London Marathon. He hopes to find another marathon to run when he has recovered - possibly the Nottingham marathon.

Marathon Des Sables Run 2007- 25th to 31st March 2007
Nicholas Walker decided to run the Marathon Des Sables in March 2007, a foot-race that takes place in the Moroccan desert totalling approximately 150 miles in stages over 7 days. It has been described as the "most difficult foot race in the world" and promises to be a huge challenge both mentally and physically. He says that he has every confidence in completing the challenge. He says "I am currently relatively fit being 22 years of age and having just graduated from St. Catherine's College, Oxford, with a degree in Geography, where I regularly played sport. I have recently lost a close family friend to pancreatic cancer and after some research I was shocked at the still extremely high mortality rates and the decreased exposure this disease receives in comparison to other terminal illnesses. I have therefore decided to undertake a personal challenge in order to raise some money for your charity and hopefully in doing so increase awareness of this illness as best I can." Zara Everton's father died of pancreatic cancer just before Christmas. She and her family decided to arrange a sponsored walk to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK, Zara walked with her mother and some friends and relatives. Zara said "The walk went really well thanks. Everybody is aching now!! The picture was taken after the walk. Not got all figures in yet but looks like we have raised about £700-£800. We started the walk at 10:57am, mom finished 1st @ 14:38pm, my step dad 2nd @ 14:48, my uncle, friend and cousin @ 15:05, me @ 15:13, my friend @15:33 then my two other friends @ 16:05. Next time we are doing it on bikes."

hour and 50 mins, which his mother thought was very good. He, however, was
disappointed in the time - says he got stuck behind a herd of slower runners
at the beginning and couldn't make up the time. Also it was very hot
apparently. They raised about £1000.
Tea and Music, Shillingford Bridge Hotel, Warborough Sunday 11th March 2007
On Sunday March 11th at the Shillingford Bridge Hotel, the Rotary Club of Wallingford organised a Harp and Flute Recital to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Harpist Deian Sion Rowlands and Flautist Nicki Phillips are professional musicians who played a wide variety of music ranging from Bach to Gershwin. The event, which began at 4 o’clock, included Afternoon Tea and was a tribute to the memory of Rotarian Bea Ramirez from Dorchester (late wife of Jo Ramirez former Mclaren team manager) who died in November 2005 from Pancreatic Cancer. £2500 was raised for Pancreatic Cancer UK which included over £800 from the raffle and the proceeds of an auction of grandstand tickets for the 2007 British Grand Prix.

Hampshire’s finest photographers came together for a stunning exhibition featuring images of wildlife and landscapes from around the world. Entry was free. Martin Davis and Lynn Humphrey exhibited some of Ray Humphrey's and Martin's work. Their prints were for sale, and they will donate any proceeds after deducting their costs to PCUK. Roger Price Memorial Football Match & Auction, David Beckham Academy in Greenwich, Sunday 21st January 2007
In November 2006 Roger Price, died as a result of cancer of the pancreas at the age of 34. Roger loved having a good time and was always the 'life and soul of the party'. He was a very charismatic guy who seemed to have an amazing ability to make friends where ever he went. It was in Roger's memory that his family and many, many friends organised a charity football match, a game very close to Roger's heart. The teams will be made up of Roger's family and friends and Ealing Association FC, who Roger previously played for. Contact us for more information.We are supported by the triathlon club Tri-Force as Trace Allen (seen left), who has had whipple's surgery for pancreatic cancer and is a former GB veteran triathlete, is a member. Trace has managed to continue his training and events during and after treatment and he achieved his ambition of qualifying for the GB age group team for the World Championships in Hamburg from August 30th to September 2nd. He took part in the World Championships again in Vancouver on 7th June 2008.
