The new, in 2008, Royal College of General Practioners Journal InnovAiT aimed at Associates in Training (AiTs) of the Royal College of General Practitioners and which promotes excellence in primary care and quality education has published an article about support for cancer patients. Although aimed at GPs it is a useful summary for cancer patients and families as well. We are pleased that the work of Pancreatic Cancer UK is highlighted in the article and that it publicises to trainee GPs the need for support and information for newly diagnosed cancer patients and the practical support needed by carers.
Some specialist nurses and patients, carers, relatives (such as us) or consultants in some parts of the country are considering how best to help patients, carers and relatives facing pancreatic cancer. Many, such as the specialist nurses in Devon and Exeter, are interested in "buddy" networks where patients or carers can talk (or email) to others who are having, or have been through, similar experiences. We are hoping to encourage more local groups to be set up around the country and to help, if possible, by coordinating a national network of buddys or groups and a central resource of information. We are currently considering such groups in areas centred on London, Devon and Exeter (ie South West of England covering Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay and Cornwall (South West Pennisula)), Wessex (based at Southampton) , Reading and Oxford, and Ipswich. Email us if you are interested in taking part in a local support group and/or "buddy" network. Also suggest it to your local specialist nurse or doctors.
