statements by Mr Hutchins 26 Jan-15 March 2004:

St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospitals Liver and Pancreas Unit now provide pancreatic cancer services for the Essex region, North East London, The City and more recently have been requested to provide services for Sussex - a total population of three and a half million people.

Nick Lemoine has moved his pancreatic cancer research service to The Royal London and we have sited at Barts one of only two Cancer Research UK units dedicated to research in this disease.

We receive 170-200 pancreatic referrals per year approximately two thirds of which are tumour-related. This was before taking on the Sussex patients which should equate to 20-25 extra resections per year on top of 55-60 we do already. This would easily make us the largest pancreatic unit in the London region.

We are the newest and most-rapidly expanding unit in London as we are only four years old .
