What We're Doing

Through the Study For Survival we have identified a number of ways to make a real impact on the fight against this disease. These include:

  • Tackling early diagnosis head-on, and the barriers that prevent it
  • Understanding whether the centralisation of pancreatic cancer care into specialist centres over the last 10 years has significantly transformed survival rates and patient experience
  • Urgently addressing the many shortcomings we have identified in the pancreatic cancer patient experience
  • Increasing our focus and investment in pancreatic cancer research in the UK

Specifically, the Study for Survival report calls for a range of immediate actions. These include:

  • Finding out how to provide GPs with more detailed information about pancreatic cancer symptoms, and ways they can assess and diagnose pancreatic cancer patients more quickly
  • A national audit of pancreatic cancer services to ensure all patients receive the highest standard of care
  • A commitment from Government to protect the role of pancreatic cancer nurse specialists (CNSs)
  • Better access for patients to clinical trials
  • Greater investment in pancreatic cancer research

In response to the report, Pancreatic Cancer UK has already launched:

  • A patient pledge to ensure everyone affected by pancreatic cancer fully understands the standard of care they should expect following diagnosis.
  • campaigning guide for MPs.
