Postponing of The Big Step Forward

Posted by: Comms 20 March 2020

After careful reflection, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone our Big Step Forward fundraising event until Saturday 5th September following the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

We know that our many brilliant supporters who have registered to take part will share our disappointment, but we are in no doubt that a temporary delay is the right decision. The wellbeing of our community must always be our first priority and we do not want to increase the risk of patients and their loved ones coming into contact with the virus. Many of you have already organised your own walks with smaller groups of family and friends. It would not be right for us to tell you to take the same decision and circumstances will change, but we ask that you consider the Government’s official advice when choosing when to complete your walk.

Pancreatic cancer does not stop during a global pandemic - thousands of people up and down the UK will still be facing this cruel disease. With your help, we will continue to be there for them when they most need us.

We are very grateful to everyone who has so enthusiastically embraced our charity’s first-ever walking event and ask our supporters to stay with us through this difficult time and keep up their fundraising efforts.

We would like to share some of our top tips with you.

  • Keep in touch and keep motivated. Join our Facebook social groups. Share your stories, find inspiration and encourage others.
  • Create a fundraising page and personalise it by writing why taking on pancreatic cancer is so important to you. Continue your fundraising by sharing your link through social media, email and WhatsApp
  • Get creative! We know that you may need to change your fundraising plans. Need advice? Please contact us

We are looking forward to when we can safely bring everyone affected by pancreatic cancer together at Beckenham Place Park to help stamp out this devastating disease. Over the coming months we will be staying in touch with all of our walkers to support them with their fundraising, and help anyone unable to join us in September plan their own walk on another date.

Thanks to the dedication of all those who fundraise so passionately for us, even in these challenging times, our committed researchers can find innovative ways to continue their ground-breaking research to speed up diagnosis, improve treatments and ultimately stamp out pancreatic cancer.

We will be in touch with everyone who was due to take part in the Big Step Forward, or hold their own event, to let you know how we will support you through this transition, and give you all of the information you need. We are working hard to try and answer as many of your questions as we can in person, but you may want to check out our FAQs page in the meantime.

As a result of the current situation, our team will be working remotely, so please bear with us as we adjust to a different way of working.

We are adapting to unprecedented circumstances but we won’t be deterred from our mission. We won’t stop until we have transformed the future for everyone affected by pancreatic cancer.
