Ever wondered what it would be like to climb Mount Everest? Well, did you know you could do an Everest Base Camp and raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK at the same time? We caught up with fundraiser Peter Perks to find out just what's involved...
What was your motivation to do an Everest Basecamp trek as a fundraising event?
Trekking through the Himalayas and seeing Everest was like realising a dream for me. I then thought that maybe I'm not the only person who can benefit from this and set about fundraising for the charity.
How did you go about promoting the event?
I used facebook to link in the justgiving.co.uk website whilst also sending emails round the office. My mum also offered her support by running a few coffee mornings.
What advice would you give to anyone considering doing something similar?
a) Start fundraising early and remind people of what you are doing and b) Pack warm clothes and be prepared to give up showers and other luxuries for a few days!
What was the most rewarding part of it for you?
Hard to determine just one part which was most rewarding, however the experience from standing at the top of Kala Patthar at dawn, watching the sunrise on Mt. Everest, realising that the previous day, you'd finally made it to everest base camp was one the highlights!
Would you do it again?
This was one of the most exciting and unforgettable experiences in my life, however as much as I would like to do the trek again, there are some many more things that I want to do and see in the world, that i don't think I would have time!
