Sandra shares what she loves about volunteering at fundraising events

17 August 2022

We spoke to Sandra, one of our incredible Events Volunteers, about her experience volunteering for Pancreatic Cancer UK, and what she loves about volunteering at fundraising events.

I volunteer because…

“I have lost two close friends to pancreatic cancer, so it’s a cause that I am passionate about and I had been thinking for a while about what I could do to ‘pay back’ for all the care and treatment that they received. When I gave up work, I knew that volunteering was what I wanted to do.

“The three things I enjoy most about being an Events Volunteer are:

  • Being part of a great team again
  • Meeting other volunteers and fundraisers at events and sharing experiences and stories about why we do what we do.
  • Standing at a cheer point or post-race venue, supporting the fundraisers, letting them know that what they are doing is amazing and appreciated, and that they are not on their own on the day and that we are all in it together”

Volunteering makes me feel…

“When I volunteer, I feel as if my simple act means something to someone.  It’s a few hours of my time, but it can make such a difference. I feel positive, sometimes humble (when I hear others stories), but overall proud that I can contribute in such an easy way to fighting this terrible disease.”

To someone looking to volunteer with Pancreatic Cancer UK, I would say…

“Do it. It’s only a few hours of your time, but it means so much to the charity and fundraisers. It’s great for building up your self-esteem and for meeting new people, who all share the same goal. The Fundraising team are amazing and will make you feel really welcome. When you put on your purple t-shirt you know that you are part of a great team.”

The London Marathon takes place on Sunday 2nd October, and we’re still looking for volunteers to help out on the day!
