Part one was held on 27th March and explored psychological support for people affected by pancreatic cancer. We began by discussing distress – how to recognise it, what is ‘normal’ and what you can do. We considered how to provide psychosocial support to patients with a life limiting prognosis and covered vicarious trauma and burnout, exploring how you can look after yourself while looking after others.
Part two was held on 3rd April and focused on communicating with and supporting people affected by pancreatic cancer from all backgrounds. The first session looked at breaking down barriers – talking about cancer within communities where it may been seen as a taboo, addressing end of life and dying and providing emotional support to people who don’t speak English or English isn’t their first language. We then discussed opening up conversations around spirituality and tips on supporting patients with different spiritual needs and explored communicating effectively and providing support to people with learning disabilities.
