‘Ask a Dietitian’ webinar

Tuesday 28th March 2023, 6pm — 7.30pm

This webinar is for people with a personal connection to pancreatic cancer; people with a diagnosis and people supporting a loved one.

Healthcare professional? Please see our dedicated events, training and resources for you.

About this webinar

There are some questions our nurses are asked time and time again on the Support Line and at our online support sessions.

  • How much pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) do I need to take? When, and how, should I be taking the Creon® capsules?
  • Are there any foods I should be avoiding?
  • What changes can I make to help me gain or maintain weight?
  • I have diabetes – should this affect what I eat?

In this webinar for patients and carers, we discuss the parts diet and PERT play in living well with pancreatic cancer.

Rachel Caddy

“I am a registered dietitian, specialising in working with people affected by pancreatic conditions, including pancreatic cancer. I work at the Liverpool University NHS Foundation Trust where I work closely with the fantastic pancreatic team, seeing patients and providing specialist dietetic input focussed on using food and nutrition to maintain or improve health wherever possible, with a strong focus on optimising quality of life.

I have a keen interest in the appropriate use of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in people with pancreatic conditions, and am passionate about providing education on the correct use of PERT to both patients and healthcare professionals.

I have presented locally and nationally to both patients and healthcare professionals on my role within healthcare and how supporting patients nutritionally can impact on their health, outcomes, and quality of life.

I live with my husband and baby daughter, and spend much of my time baking sweet treats (and the rest of the time thinking about what to bake next!).”

“I am a registered dietitian, supporting people with cancer who are undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy. I specialise in cancers of the pancreas, liver and biliary system, working with my fabulous team at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (Liverpool and Wirral) and closely with colleagues at The Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Where my colleague Rachel supports patients before and after surgery, I support patients through their treatment. As an oncology dietitian my aim is to maintain or optimise nutrition and health during chemotherapy, and I do this by offering individualised nutritional advice, including strategies around managing treatment side effects. A big part of this is educating and empowering people to manage their diet and PERT.

I provide holistic care with support from clinical nurse specialists and other vital teams, including those in psychological medicine and physiotherapy. We work together to improve patients’ wellbeing and quality of life.

I am passionate about working with people with pancreatic cancer, supporting patients and caregivers to manage PERT effectively. I write articles on pancreatic cancer and diet, and have had articles published nationally in popular nutrition magazines. I deliver education sessions on PERT locally, and am looking forward to reaching people across the UK at this webinar.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, most importantly my husband and my one-year-old son. We enjoy walks and fresh air together. Of course, I love anything food-related, whether it be cooking, tweaking recipes or eating. How could you be a dietitian if you didn’t like food, right?!”

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing someone who has struggled with diet and PERT walk through the door a completely different person: empowered, positive, with increased strength and, most importantly, a smile on their face. Knowing you have contributed to that improvement in wellbeing is the best feeling ever, and why I love being a dietitian!
